Useful information
- Sailing is classified as an adrenaline (extreme) sport and your travel insurance must include this kind of activities
- Climate varies significantly between the port and open sea
- Do not neglect sun protection and hydration
- Dehydration is, from medical point of view, the disruption (interference) of homeostasis (inner balance of the human body) because of decreasing water levels in the human body (normal level is between 60% and 70%). Dehydration is life threatening. Causes can be: sweating, diarrhoea or vomiting
- The regulation of the human body temperature is a function of the nervous system. It is provided by vein dilatation in skin, sweating, muscles tremors (shivering) and hormones e.g. long term adaptation to cool conditions by the hormones of the thyroid and adrenal glands
- A one week vacation though does not allow proper acclimatization
- A high air humidity does not allow for the evaporation of sweat and therefore it is necessary to cool the human body
- Fever is a reaction of the organism and cooling is necessary at 39°C. The limit for the human body to survive is 41,9°C
- Sunstroke is caused by the overheating of the brain by direct sunshine (40°C)
- Heatstroke is the accumulation of heat in human body (40°C)
- Hypothermia - 26°C in the human organs is the lowest temperature that human body can handle; lower temperature leads to cardiac arrest. This is possible even in tropical sea.
- Seasickness - relates to kinetosis (sickness from movement). The cause is the sensitivity of the vestibular system in the inner ear. This system is responsible for the balance of the head and body in relation to visual perception. Nausea leads to vomiting, which does not help and the problem can worsen to dehydration. The sickness retreats after a while. Kinedryl helps only if used timely.
